About this Item
First Edition. viii, 139, [1] pp. Original cloth. Ink stamp on title page, else Very Good. "In 1865, Frankland was asked by the government to analyse metropolitan drinking water, which led the publication of his book Water Analysis for Sanitary Purposes, in 1880" (please ask for on-line source). Frankland's pioneering work on the safety of public drinking water in England attracted the attention of the country's greatest scientist of the day, perhaps ever -- Charles Darwin. On April 20, 1880, Darwin wrote Frankland: "May CD's son send some bottles of water, in which Pelargonium leaves have been immersed, for more precise analysis of the potassium or other soluble ash? Can EF recommend a professional analyst to take on further experiments?" (Darwin Library Web site). Seller Inventory # 13649
