"On the very day which the book was intended to commemorate, and before many copies had been distributed, bombs fell on Berlin destroying the plates and the entire stock of printed volumes" (from the Foreword to the English translation). These lectures, from symposia held in 1941-42, were published to commemorate Arnold Sommerfeld’s seventy-fifth birthday. Of the 15 contributions, five are by Heisenberg himself.
