This is "Voltaire's Poeme sur la Loi Naturelle, a Critical Edition" by Francis J. Crowley, published by the University of California Press as a volume in the monographic series issued by the University of California at Los Angeles in Languages and Literatures in 1938 (Volume 1, No. 4, series pp. 177 - 304). This is the first Edition . ********************************************* In 1756, in reaction to the calamitous disaster of the Lisbon Earthquake, Voltaire published two works: " Poeme sur le disastre de Lisbonne" ("Poem on the Lisbon Earthquake") and "Poeme sur la Loi Naturelle" ("Poem on Natural Law"). Both books were banned by the Vatican because of Voltaire's harsh views on the Catholic Church. In "Poeme sur la Loi Naturelle", Voltaire posited a universal morality that was natural and totally free and independent of organized religion, and of any human ideas of a supreme being. He spoke out strongly against ideological fanaticism, especially as formulated within religious organizations . such as the Church. ************************************************* This is what is likely the main critical edition of "Poem sur la Loi Naturelle", with copious notes and textual variants. ********************************************* The book came from the personal library of Arthur J, Knodel, a renowned literary critic, who was the world's leading authority on the works of French poet, Saint John Perce. Knodel's signature is written in pencil across the top of the front cover. The penciled signature of Arthur J. Knodel is written along the top edge of the front cover. / BINDING : Solid with no detached or loose leaves/ INTERIOR : Professor Knodel made a few light marginal marks here and there through the text . else clean and presentable.
