Culturally important work written in Dutch during the authors' 12-year stay in Dutch Guiana and Suriname. The Penard brothers, born and raised in Suriname, wrote some of the most influential literature of their times on Surinamese ornithology, and, apart from their ornithological research also performed extensive linguistic and anthropological research. The books include a collection of the birds of the region, their breeding habitats and their migration patterns. The first volume was published in 1908 and the second was not published until 1910 when proceeds from the sale of the first volume became available.
