The second book of many written by the prolific and beloved Newbery Award winning author Jean Craighead George. This fictionalized story about a mink named Vison was written with meticulous research about the life spans, habitats, and behaviors of the animals along the Muddy Branch River in Maryland, such as cicadas, salamanders, skunk cabbages and Cooper's Hawks, Black Snakes, wild onions, Luna moths, and more, plus Vison's human friends and foes who lived along the river. Vison "plundered and hissed and hated his way through life, a lithe, beautiful little bandit who seemed not to know the meaning of fear". "Authentic nature lore written with drama and warm understanding." (Quotes are from the dust jacket). Contains rural 1950's views on hunting & trapping, and some dated language such as the term Negro. CONDITION DETAILS (see our photos of actual book for sale): Stated 1949 FIRST EDITION on copyright page, a Junior Literary Guild Book edition. Rust colored cloth boards with gray/green titles and stamped sketch of a mink on front cover. Minimal scuffing or shelf wear, no fading. Top edge of front & back boards have a mild bump. Dust jacket shows $2.50 price on front flap. Several chips, stains & edge tears on the dj, but the cover illustration is still bright and striking. The binding is tight and the pages are clean and crisp with no writing, no marks, no creased corners, no water damage, and only one ¼" page edge tear throughout. NOT ex-library.
