4to Softcover in stiff wraps. 191pp. with b/w and color illustrations. Clean, unmarked, well bound. Text in English and Danish. Published to coincide with an exhibition of Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershoi's (1864-1916) works at Ordrupgaard art museum, Copenhagen, 1981. Short biographical essay by Harald Olsen, a critical essay entitled "The Black and White Colourist" by Thorkild Hansen, and preface by Hanne Finsen. Mild to moderate shelfwear to wraps, 1.5" oblique crease to rear cover. Very small bump to top of spine. First 19pp tinily bumped at upper corner, not at all affecting text or image. Page interiors crisp and bright. A collection of subdued, haunting portraits and paintings of interiors, the viewing of which produces an effect "as if [their subjects] have been brought back for us from their perishable world. All the reality that merely wishes to do away with us, has in some way or other been overcome. When we look at these pictures we sense, as we do with Vermeer's pictures, that time has stopped, the world has been brought to silence, and eternity has commenced - without our having died first" (from Hansen's essay").
