Macmillan. London. 1938. 253 pages. First edition, first printing. 1938 present on copyright page AND title page. Book is tight. Binding and hinges are strong. Illustrated map endpapers. Black cloth boards show minimal, minor soiling. Original, rare DJ. $3.00 price stamped at base of flap. DJ shows light soiling, shallow chipping along edges, textural scuff on front, and faint clouding and darkening to spine area of DJ. In the 1930s Crankshaw lived in Vienna, teaching English. He witnessed Adolf Hitler's Austro-German union in 1938, and predicted the Second World War, while observing the magical, storied culture of Vienna disappear before his eyes, in 1938, the year of publication.
