About this Item
Anstey, F. (pseudonym of T. Anstey Guthrie). Vice Versa: A Farcical Fantastic Play in Three Acts. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1910. First edition. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1] 2-175 [176: printer's imprint] [177-184: publisher's ads]. Original beige pictorial paper wrappers, all sides printed in dark brown. Covers lightly dust-soiled, binding just a bit leaned, spine panel somewhat wrinkled with slight loss to top centimeter (not touching any type), a good to very good copy of a somewhat fragile item, one of the author's scarcest titles today. #1812. $150. The novel on which this play was based was the author's first and remained very popular for years after its first appearance in 1882. The author had previously sold the dramatic rights to Edward Rose, who produced a very short stage version (the script comes to just 28 pages), but Anstey bought back the rights later from Rose's estate in order to make his own dramatic adaptation. The play opened in London on November 10th and ran long enough to net Anstey a tidy profit and garner critical praise. The story presents a darkly comic tale of a personality exchange between a stodgy father and unruly teenage son. Seller Inventory # 1812
