"Lin Yutang has set his new novel about China in the early 1930s - the period of the great Moslem Rebellion. .novel typical of Lin Yutang at his best. There are vivid descriptions of natural scenery, the beautiful lake of Sunganor set like a jewel in the mountains of Kansu, the monastery of the lamas of Dingkor Gompa, and throughout the whole story there is the author's characteristic disdain for corrupt and cruel officials and his sympathy for the poor and oppressed. In fact he takes his title from a line of poetry by Tu Fu: 'Within the vermilion gates, / meats and wines go to waste / While on the roadside lie the / frozen bodies of the poor." --- Original black cloth boards, lettered red on spine with red motif on front board (20.1 cm height). Endpapers: tinted map showing area of China - part of Outer Mongolia, Chinese Turkestan, Tibet, Inner Mongolia.
