About this Item
A first impression of the first UK edition, published in 1958. The book was originally published in the USA by Dodd, Mead & Company, New York in 1957. Jacket designed by Donald Green. ***Very good in blue cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles and decorations to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright. No bumps to the boards. Corners just very slightly creased. Cloth clean and unmarked. There is a light vertical reading crease to the spine. Some sporadic foxing to the fore-edge of the page block. Internally also very good, with no inscriptions. Pages clean and uncreased. Light offsetting to the front and rear endpapers. ***In a very good original printed dustwrapper, designed by Donald Green. The dustwrapper retains the original publisher's printed price of 12s 6d net. There is only slight wear and rubbing to the edges of the dustwrapper which is complete with fresh and vibrant colours. There is some minor loss to the head of the spine, and to the top and bottom of the foldovers. Small nicks, rubbing and creasing to the edges, with a small closed tear at the bottom of the back panel. Some darkening to the edges, but no fading. ***190mm x 130mm. 189 pages. ***'The funeral procession was a long one, about 125 cars, stretching for more than the whole length of Westbury's Main Street. For Carl Morgan had been more than its Chief of Police; he had been a local institution. Ed Morgan, his son, had come home for the funeral, his first visit in sixteen years; and when he saw how the little town had boomed and turned into a cow-country Gomorrah, he understood the reasons for his father's violent death. "I could go out in that street right now and before night I could make fifty arrests. You need a police department, sure! But right now you need a complete scouring." And the scouring began right in the middle of the funeral.' [Quote taken from the prologue] ***'In "The Floods of Fear" the Hawkins Brothers created a situation and a story of the utmost tension. In "Violent City" they create tension as great in a quite different setting, that of a small town that had boomed into a cow-country Gomorrah; but though Westbury had boomed, its police force had not.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***A first UK edition, far less common than the first American edition, in the original dustwrapper. We also have listed a nice copy of the First American edition. Classic pulp fiction from the 1950s. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 7733x
