1939. First edition. xi, 325pp. Oliver Joseph St John Gogarty (1878-1957) was an Irish poet, author, otolaryngologist, athlete, politician, and well-known conversationalist. He served as the inspiration for Buck Mulligan in James Joyce's novel Ulysses. 'Tumbling in the Hay' is a semi-autobiographical comic novel about medical students in Dublin at the start of the 20th century. The book is bound in the original black cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the endpapers and first few pages, including some light marks on the title page. There is no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper is worn and has shelf wear with some soiling and staining. About 1" is missing from the top of the spine and part of the top front edge, and about 1/2" is missing from the bottom of the spine and around the bottom front corner. There are several tears on the edges and large tears on the front spine edge. The dustwrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover. Seller Inventory # Ireland381
