Fascinating account of the author's journey in the Levant. Newton was vice-consul between 1852 and 1859 and lead the British government's expedition to Asia Minor in 1856, when the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was excavated. He became a curator at the British Museum in 1861.
