Shaken with some cracking on the front inside hinge. Map has missing chips along the edge and several tears. Whymper was associated with the Western Union Telegraph Expedition, he served as its' artist, that was to cross through Alaska setting up a line of communication with the Far East. This account contains material relating to his activities along the coast in British Columbia; Vancouver Island explorations; visit to the capital of Alaska, Sitka; several voyages in the North Pacific during 1865-66; activities in Kamchatka and the eastern part of Siberia; Norton Sound and the sledge-journey to the Yukon River with the expeditions ascent and decent of the Yukon with an excellent account of Fort Yukon; telegraph explorations in Asia; with the final three chapters dealing with California.
