About this Item
176pp., 4to (12¼ x 9¼ inches). Color illustrations. New in the original cloth, dust-jacket, and glassine wrapper, although the glassine wrapper can be opened if a purchaser would like the book defaced with an - entirely optional - author s inscription. First edition, presenting documentary and visual evidence that books were predominantly sold during this period ready-bound in sheep, calf, and goat as well as in boards and wrappers. Over two hundred color illustrations show what these bindings looked like, and how their styles evolved. The London Times Literary Supplement called the book "a bold and welcome step forward" in the study of bookbinding history, and an American reviewer described it as "a tool for the discerning book connoisseur [which] fills a long-standing gap in the bookbinding literature that, in retrospect, is as self-evident as a missing front tooth." Prospective overseas purchasers should note that normal ABE postage rates will not apply and that the postage cost will certainly be greater than the price of the book. Seller Inventory # 14242
