Pamphlet bound into later calf and marbled boards. 8vo. 57pp. First book by the historian Edward Channing (1856-1931), a specialist in American colonial and Revolutionary history who taught at Harvard for over 40 years. He is best known for his multivolume "History of the United States" for which he won the 1926 Pulitzer Prize for History. In this work he argues that comparisons of American with European institutions rested upon erroneous analogies and meaningless similarities. This copy came from the library of noted Harvard professor and medieval scholar, Francis Peabody Magoun, with his bookplate at front and his ink notes and underlinings on 19 of the book's pages. The text is in good condition with some soiling and wear and a few small edge tears. The binding is in fair condition with some heavy scuffing and wear and with the spine chipped away. Scarce.
