Maroon textured cloth with gilt lettering and borders. Rubbing to all edges, spine lightly sunned. Faint tide mark to boards. Tips of corners bumped. Small previous owner bookplate neatly adhered to front pastedown. Front endpaper has been roughly torn out, causing a tear to upper edge of half title near gutter. Text is overall clean and bright, the occasional smudge. Pages 361-364 are torn along margin. Does not affect text. Frontis illustration and others throughout by J. Ayton Symington.
