About this Item
This rare First Edition with the Dust Jacket is most highly valued. I've seen only two others. You can take a look for yourself. They are Very expensive, ($240 & $390) despite significant condition issues. As you read the description below and look at the photographs you'll see that my book shares their condition issues. But, not their price. Beginning with the book, positives and negatives. The front cover looks terrific. The paste-on illustration is in great shape. The cloth above and below it is in great shape. Check out the photo. The spine of the book is in excellent shape. The lettering is strong and the wear at the spine ends is fairly minor. The corners of the book have held up quite well with little to no wear. The back cover of the book has light stains at the lower center and running vertically near the middle edge. They are the result of a large stain on the back of the dust jacket that seeped through. The stain on the back has not affected the inside of the cover, however, related or unrelated, there are a number of brown stains on the middle page edges and a few of them have migrated onto the margin edges of pages 269 through 280, which is the last page of the book. There are other instances on earlier pages where these middle edge stains can just be seen at the edge of a page. The top page edge and bottom page edge have no soiling at all. Between the verso of the half title page and the verso of the frontispiece there is a slight crack (showing a wee bit of webbing) running only about halfway down. That is the only juncture in the book where a crack can be seen. The book is well bound. It is very tight and very square. Nothing is loose. Nothing feels loose. In fact the book feels very solid in one's hands. The pages, other than what I've just described, are very clean. I don't see any soiling other than those which came off the middle edges. There are no markings or writing anywhere in the book. And I'm not seeing any creases. There are four full-page glossy black and white and red illustrations including the frontispiece. They are all in excellent condition. They were in no way affected by the middle edge stains. They have no soiling, no creases, no tears. I didn't see any tears anywhere in the book. Nor is there any foxing around the illustrations or anywhere else. This book would have been in Near Fine to Fine condition were it not for what I assume was a spill that affected the back cover and middle page edges. On to the dust jacket. Here are a few positives. It is intact and has not suffered any efforts of repair. There's no tape anywhere. Also, it is Not price-clipped. The $1.75 original price can be seen at the middle of the top edge of the front flap and again at the far right of the top edge of the rear flap, though a small tear on the rear flap removes the top of the 7 and 5. The flaps have only a little bit of edge wear, with only two small chips on the rear flap at the bottom and top adjacent to the rear cover chips. The rear flap also has a thin line on it's outer edge of the stain carrying over from the back of the dj. The negatives are there for you to see in the first three photographs. There are tears and there are chips and there is the aforementioned stain on the back. Seller Inventory # 000600
