About this Item
8vo (7.38 x 5.13), original embossed brown cloth, gilt lettering, 251, [1] pages plus a [12]-page publisher s catalog in the rear. A historical novel with a frustrating author attribution (the given name resists the most obvious reference sources), its contemporary reception no doubt hindered by a certain slipshod inattention that did not augur well for its success--at least one major New England newspaper advertised the work as Jo rather than Io, while the United States Magazine and Democratic Review attributes the work to K. Bartow rather that Barton. (The latter review congratulated the publishers on the neat and tasteful style in which the book had been issue.) Wright II, 232: "A tale of Epheseus prior to the Christian era." A trifle rubbed and the corners and foot of the spine, some light splashes to the cloth; slight to light foxing throughout; a very good copy. Seller Inventory # 21551
