4 volumes. The very Scarce First Edition of the translation into English, significantly more rare than the 1807 printing. Small 8vo, in very attractive modern bindings of sage cloth backed in tan linen with printed paper spine labels, marbled endpapers, blanks retained. xix, 279; xvi, 302; xii, 263; xvi, 331 pp. A handsome set, the text still very fresh and very clean, the bindings as pristine. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF THE HIGHLY INTERESTING AND EXTENSIVE ITALIAN TRAVELS OF AUGUSTUS VON KOTZEBUE. Von Kotzebue was at this time a very famous literary figure across most of Europe. Kotzebue moved primarily between Germany and Russia throughout his career, but also traveled extensively to place such as Italy, France, Estonia and even Alaska and beyond. Primarily a dramatist. his writings tended to lean towards the inflammatory, which frequently put him afoul of personalities both political and literary. In fact, his controversial nature would eventually be his undoing; in 1818 he was murdered in Germany by a theology student. Seller Inventory # 30598
