Atlas portfolio tied with black ribbon. Same plates as the folio sized Atlas, here the plates are folded into a quarto (4to) portfolio with ties. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Very good, typical wear on the edges and corners of these government calf bindings. Top of the monograph volume is torn. Generally, these late 19th Century government bindings didn't hold up after 120+ years. These are intact with moderate wear. Interiors are clean, endpapers with acid browning from the leather. The plates are clean and bright. The loose Atlas plates laid into the folding portfolio are all very good and better. Original folds with occasional small splitting; all ready for conservation framing. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: One of the magnificent sets of books on the Southwest canyon lands, the Grand Canyon region in particular. The author, Clarence E. Dutton, a geologist and army officer, had begun surveying the rugged region of the Colorado Plateau as an associate of explorer John Wesley Powell in 1875. The Atlas accompanying the Tertiary History of the Grand Canġn presented both geological and topographical maps created by W. H. Holmes for the U.S. Geological Survey and view plates. The offered Atlas includes eight beautifully executed maps of the region and four of geology on twelve sheets, as well as eight of the ten sheets of views. (missing 15 & 18). W. H. Holmes, whom William Goetzmann calls: "the greatest artist-topographer and man of many talents that the West ever produced.his illustrations for Dutton's Tertiary History of the Grand Canon District are masterpieces of realism and draftsmanship as well as feats of imaginative observation. views include a number of images that are designed to form larger continuous panoramas" [Exploration And Empire (1958)]. Certainly one of the best publications of the scientific expeditions in the American West. A very special presentation of the Grand Canyon with the well executed panoramas. Seller Inventory # 0122057
