From one of Ernest Wessen's "Midland Notes": "Though the old doctor set out to write a serious work on local history, the sportsman in him caused him to stray afield. The chapter headed "Early Settlements" soon wanders into a discussion of field-dogs, and over half of it is devoted to that subject. The chapter on "Ohio Professions" becomes a series of hunting anecdotes, etc., etc.An important book that has become very scarce.". Coyle, Ohio Authors (1962); p. 344.
