About this Item

Dedication to Right Honourable FRANCIS, Lord Viscount Rialton to left hand side. Herman Moll (1654-1732) came to London in about 1678 and worked as an engraver for other publishers, such as Moses Pitt, Greenville Collins, John Adair, and Seller & Price, but soon set up his own business publishing atlases and also separate maps of all parts of the world. His work was varied, ranging from miniature maps to large very decorative wall maps. The first maps engraved by Moll in his own right were prepared for the atlas volume accompanying Sir Jonas Moore s New System Of The Mathematicks, in which he began to develop his characteristic engraving style. Maps in Moll s large folio atlas, The World Describ d, are clearly printed with large cartouches enclosing the title and dedication, and often with large vignettes. This atlas, Moll's crowning achievement and a pinnacle of eighteenth-century European cartography, was published in nine British and two pirated Irish editions between 1715 and 1754, and usually comprised thirty large two- sheet maps of all parts of the world. It not only exhibited Moll's engraving skill in its most distinctive form, it also contained some of the best examples of his characteristic and famous map notations. * c. 1700 A General Atlas (no title) (large folio: maps in four folds) 1730 Re-issued * 1701 A System of Geography (small folio) * 1708 Fifty six New and Accurate Maps of Great Britain (Morden) * 1709 Atlas manuale - A New Set of Maps of all parts of the Earth (8vo) 1723 Re-issued * 1710 The south part of Great Britain called England and Wales (Thomas Bowles) * 1711-17 Atlas Geographicus (4to) * 1714 The north part of Great Britain called Scotland (Thomas Bowles) * 1715 A new map of Great Britain * 1715 A New and Exact Map of the Dominions of the King of Great Britain on ye Continent of North America (on 2 sheets - the 'Beaver' map) 1726-40 Re-issued * c.1715-54 A new and Complete Atlas Re-issues entitled The World Described * 1721 Geographia Antiqua * 1724 A New Description of England and Wales 1724-26 Re-issued as A Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales (with T. and J.
