J. Wright & Sons, Bristol; Simpkin, Marshall, London 1931, 1st edition. 8vo, 163pp, b&w photographic ills throughout. Orig. blue cloth, black title. Spine slt. sunned & lightly rubbed at the spine head and front corners, couple of light marks on covers, but overall a nice copy of an extremely rare book. Spence 770. Matthews, while on the Discovery committee, worked on whale biology in South Georgia. He travelled there in the autumn of 1924 to establish a marine laboratory and eventually wrote his major monographs on humpback, sei, right, and sperm whales, published in Discovery reports.
