1st ed., octavo, pp.8, (iv, prospectus), (ii), x, 361, (viii, publisher's adverts), b&w tinted fronts., 4 plates and a map, plus a large folding Arrowsmith map (490 x 600 mm) with applied hand-colouring to the mines and coastlines, half bound leather, top edge gilt, marbled bds, gilt titled leather spine labels with publisher's original cloth binding together with chipped spine bound in at end. Very good condn. "While working at Anlaby in 1842 Francis discovered with Captain Charles Bagot the Kapunda copper mine. In search of suitable miners to work it, he went in 1845 to London where he sold his share and next year published South Australia and its Mines" (ADB). On returning to Australia, Dutton entered politics; he went on to become the seventh premier of Australia, serving for eleven days in June 1863, and again for six months in 1865. The district of Dutton and Mount Dutton in the far north of South Australia bear his name. The plates are exceptionally clean. With the rare large folding map by Arrowsmith present. Ferguson 4267.
