About this Item
1900. First edition. xvi, 248pp.The author of this work was born in Scotland but lived in South Africa from the year 1871; firstly in the Eastern Province of the Cape Colony, and then in Cape Town and later the Transvaal. He married into a family Dutch descent, and the poilitical affairs of South Africa entered strongly into his life. This book was written to help those not conversant with South African conditions and affairs to better understand the general position of the country. It includes chapters on Paul Kruger and his trial, the Bond and its aims, the Afrikander Uitlander, the culpability of the Bond Cabinet, and Boer apologists. The book is bound in the original dark green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. This is an ex-library copy with some of the usual library indications. The case of the book has shelf wear with some soiling on the boards and the spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth. The bottom corners are lightly bumped with some damage to the cloth on the bottom edge of the corners. There is a small old paper label near the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few marks from finger smudges, etc., some small stains and some foxing on the endpapers. The principal library indications are labels on the front and rear fixed endpapers; traces of removed labels on the rear free endpaper; a reference number on the top edge of the title page; and pin-hole stamp on the bottom of the title page and following few pages and last few pages of the book. There is also a blind "Presentation Copy" stamp on the title page. Seller Inventory # AfricaSouth205
