Man's Mastery of the Air as Shown by the Brilliant Flights of America's Leading Air Explorer. His Life, His Thrilling Adventures, His North Pole and Trans-Atlantic Flights, Together With His Plans for Conquering the Antarctic By Air. Autobiography. xv + 359pp + 48 photos on plates sewn in. Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr. (1888?1957) was an American naval officer and explorer. He served in both WWI & WWII, was a recipient of the Medal of Honor, the highest honor for valor given by the United States. He is remembered as a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics. He retired from the US Navy as a Rear Admiral. Aircraft flights in which he served as a navigator and expedition leader crossed the Atlantic Ocean, a segment of the Arctic Ocean, and a segment of the Antarctic Plateau. Byrd claimed that his expeditions had been the first to reach both the North Pole and the South Pole by air. His claim to have reached the North Pole is disputed. He is also known for discovering Mount Sidley, the largest dormant volcano in Antarctica. Hardcover retired from a public library has no DJ. This copy bound in a reinforced library binding and includes the maps of North Pole expedition found in front endpapers. All photo illustrations are present. Usual library ink stamps and pastings are present. Interior shows handling of a popular title. Binding is tight, markings do not harm legibility. Copyright 1928. Made in U.S.A.
