About this Item
First Edition. Quarto. Brown paper covered rigid card wraps with cream cloth spine, one photograph pasted to the front board together with the gilt title-piece. Introduction by Green, who was editor of the Shanghai based North-China Daily News. The photogravures are tipped onto the recto of the pages with captions facing. Neat gift inscription to ffep, "With best Christmas Wishes from Norman & Mary Leslie 1927". Fine condition internally, the covers a little wrinkled and the edges worn as usually seen as they extend beyond the page block. Mary Leslie, born Mary Martin in Yorkshire in 1879, worked as a midwife in Oxford where she met an Australian Rhodes scholar, Norman Leslie, who took a job with the Asiatic Petroleum Company in China upon graduation. Mary followed him to China and they made their life there. This and much more of Mary's life and family is in her autobiography, "Through Changing Scenes", which was published in 1972. A copy of her book, signed and inscribed, will be included with this Shanghai of Today. Seller Inventory # B7247
