Two volumes. Uniformly bound in brown embossed cloth with gilt lettering on spine, as issued. Small 8vo. Two Volumes set, each with an engraved frontispiece. Vol 1: pp. 356 (The 32-page Publisher's Catalogue dated October 1845 is not present in this set) but bound by Westley s & Clark, London. . Vol 2:pp. 374. First Edition, printed in London by J. & H. Cox, brothers, bound by Wesleys & Clark A contemporary inscription of former owner Mary Isabell Sally Lowndes., May 1847 . The covers are a little worn and rubbed, corners bumped, top and bottom of spine edges a little frayed, as to be expected. Inside the frontis tissue is foxed affecting the title page and frontis, otherwise the text is clean. A very acceptable two volume set. Marryat, as a British naval captain, visited Canada and the United States in 1837-38. In the present work of juvenile fiction, "he showed that a family that had emigrated and settled near Kingston, Upper Canada, was delighted when the opportunity came to return to England to claim an inheritance.
