About this Item
Apparent First Edition (NAP), likely a small printing. The author's wife, Eva May Cannon, signed the book on the blank rear side of the title page. The inscription reads: 'To the G. F. Atkinsons from Eva M. Cannon.' The author passed away in 1938. His wife writes 'To honor his memory and in appreciation of the research he did and the wit that was his, fifteen years after his passing, the manuscript, as he left it, is being printed.' The book is dedicated to Ms. Cannon 'without whose collaboration this work would not have been undertaken.' The short Preface written by the author reads: 'The Louisiana Purchase, which transferred to the United States approximately 1,000,000 miles of territory at a price of less than four cents an acre, the acquisition of California, the discovery of gold and the subsequent development of the Western States have been themes of abiding interest to me. During my travels over the country, covering a stretch of fifty-eight years, I have searched out many pioneers who were connected directly or indirectly with events of the emigration period which should be preserved for posterity. A few of these events are incorporated in this volume.' The book is in very nice condition. You can see the covers in the photos. They are in very nice shape with only minor wear, a little rubbing here and there, and a very thin crease of crinkle coming down a ways from the front top edge. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are in excellent condition. They are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. There is a tan shadow on the title page, perhaps a small newspaper clipping was left sitting between the pages there. There is a teeny tiny crease just below the tip of the first two pages. I saw only one other crease. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And the signed inscription is the only writing to found anywhere. Seller Inventory # 005062
