About this Item
In Hebrew. 192 leaves. (384 pages). 31 x 21 cm. (12.5 x 8.25 inches). Very attractive modern leather binding. Stained in places, especially leaves 176 to end. The book was printed in 32 gatherings: signatures 1 - 32 (1-6), which comes to 192 leaves (= 384 pages). However, leaves 152 and 153 are identical and leaves 154 and 155 are identical. So while there is here the correct number of leaves, the two duplicate leaves are here instead of 2 leaves that should be here but are not. This is remedied by having here photocopies of the two missing leaves. The error apparently originated with the printer 470 years ago. Also, signature Kaf Bet (22) is bound ahead of signature Kaf Alef (number 21), and so the pages that is here penciled as numbers 127-132 should precede the pages penciled as number 121-126. Linguistic commentary to the Bible. The title page has the illustrated border of Soncino press since the printer Moshe Parnes previously worked a the Soncino press. See A. Ya'ari, Jewish Printing in Constantinople, number 148. Vinograd, Const. 199; Adams S-1418. Steinschneider, Cat. Bodl. 6956 (1). It appears that ibn Melech made extensive use of the early grammarian, David Kimchi's Sepher ha-Shorashim, to the extent of co-opting some of Kimchi's translations to Provencal. For examples, see notes by Biesenthal and Lebrecht, Sepher ha-Shorashim (Berlin, 1847), columns 820-821. The verso of the final leaf contains praise of the book by Shlomo ibn Mazaltov and Abraham ben Ephraim ibn Shangi, and indicates that the printer Parnas is deceased at this point in 1549. Next to his name are the letters Nun Ayin = Nishmato Eden (May his soul rest in Paradise). Seller Inventory # 007080
