About this Item
First American Edition ( 'Published in November, 1910', also SD and NAP; Sturgis & Walton first editions='published (month, year) with same date on verso with no later printings'). A very rare copy. Part of 'The Court Series of French Memoirs.' The book is in rather nice condition, especially considering that it was published in 1910. You can see the covers in the photos. The gilt lettering on the front is nicely bright. On the spine it is fairly bright. There isn't any wear on the gilt on either the front or spine, rather surprising. The covers are pretty clean. They do have some surface scratching and some small spots at the front bottom edge where there is a loss of the dark blue color. There is some crinkling and light bending at the spine ends, no tears. The cover edges are in good shape, just a tiny bit of color loss at the bottom ones. The corners look good, just a little light surface rubbing. There aren't any conspicuous stains or soiling on the page edges. The book is solidly bound from cover to cover. I found only one instance where there was a very thin space between two facing pages, both pages are tightly bound from top to bottom. The covers are nicely, tightly bound. The interior of the book is in very nice condition. Foremost, the pages are exceptionally clean. I saw one tan spot on the blank verso of the frontispiece and one on the facing blank side of the half-title page. Scrolling through the pages, I came upon one small tan spot on one of the illustrations and one in the same place on the text page facing it. I didn't find any other soiling. There is one imperfection, the reason for the 'Minus' in the condition rating: there is a crease just off the bottom corner of half the pages in the book. I believe there was probably a bump. The crease is not near the print. I didn't see any creasing to the top corners. There are no placeholder creases. I found one page with a small, light surface scuff off its middle edge, also a tiny tear there, both for from the print. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. There is a five page Introduction. There are eight full-page illustrations, including the frontispiece, all on semi-glossy paper. I counted and accounted for all of them. They are all in excellent condition. The illustrations are of Philippe d'Orleans, the Regent (the frontispiece), The Palais Royal, John Law, Peter The Great, Louis XV as a Child, Cardinal Alberoni, The Duchesse du Maine, and Cardinal Dubois.
