1953. First edition. ix, 339pp., a black and white frontispiece, 7 other black and white sketches by Jose and 22 black and white photographs. Walter Fitzwilliam Starkie (1894-1976) was an Irish scholar, Hispanist, author and musician. His reputation is principally based on his popular travel writing, including Raggle-Taggle (1933) and Spanish Raggle-Taggle (1934). This book gives accounts of the life and history of the gypsies, and is based on two journeys he made in France and Spain, the first started in 1926 and the second in 1940. There is a fascinating account of the annual gypsy-meeting at the shrine of Sainte Marie de la Mer, Camargue, Provence. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a small gold illustration on the bottom corner of the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards. The spine is faded with some wear to the titling and the spine ends are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with foxing on the free endpapers and half-title page. There is no inscription. Seller Inventory # gSocHist01
