About this Item
8vo. xxix, 511, [5], [2] (pages of publisher's advertisements) pp. Illustrated by a folding map of Santo Domingo, twenty-three plates, and numerous other small engravings within the text. The engravings include depictions of scorpions, iguanas, wildcats, and tobacco. The dedication page includes an engraving of a man on horseback, with his back turned to the reader (the engraving either representing Hazard or the president of Cornell University, to whom the book is dedicated). The first page of the preface is decorated with a large vignette engraving and the frontispiece depicts a detailed engraving of cacao, papaya, plantains, and other exported foods from the island. Hazard's book includes a nine page bibliography of other works published on the history of Santo Domingo and Hayti. Hazard also writes on the gold mining and indigo production within the region. He even recounts the harsh treatment of the natives based on primary sources available to the author at the time. A fascinating account of the history of the island, including its plundering and colonization by the Europeans, the political division of the island (the "Spanish" versus the "Creole" sides), the wildlife of the region, and of the agriculture and food produced in Hayti. A Very Good+ book with the front hinge faintly starting and a blank bookplate on the front pastedown. Seller Inventory # 00008079
