"Imagine a valley of incomparable natural beauty, accessible only by boat, seaplane or foot, and protected from the ambiguous benefits of modern civilization by craggy, snow-covered peaks and an Alpine lake 55 miles long. Then imagine a small, close-knit community of fiercely independent Americans whose economic system was based not on supply and demand but on 'ideas of need, ability and neighborliness.' This was Stehekin at the end of World Wars II. [After the war] Grant McConnell and his wife.settled in the Stehekin Valley for what was to be a winter of catching up. They ended up staying several years, observing and being absorbed into the simple and yet complex life of the valley. Trained as a social scientist, McConnell found a community where concepts of ownership and the value of labor arose from the real and immediate needs of individual Stehekinites. Yet gradually the values that set Stehekin apart from the world 'downlake' slipped away, almost unnoticed, re-enacting in miniature the same loss of community that had transformed the entire nation--many years earlier." [from the dust jacket] A unique and intriguing book about a unusual community. NOTE: This is the first edition published in 1988 and not the later 2014 edition. Seller Inventory # 009440
