It is informative and simply written. Professor Garland considers Schiller against the background of his intellectual environment, and he simultaneously illustrates the development of the German writer, dwelling in detail upon each phase and relating it to personal circumstances at the time. Above all, he deals critically and appreciatively with the individual works. descriptive analyses of the plays - Die Rauber, don Carlo, Wallenstein and Wilhelm Tell conspicuous among them - and of the many lyrical poems and masterly ballads, are exceptionally penetrating and well argued. a similar understanding is displayed in regard to schiller the historian and philosopher.'
