Illustrated with three maps. Woodward's history of how Russia built their navy and modernized their naval fleet. Woodward explains that their naval capabilities proved important in the Crimean War, in the conflict between Japan and Russia, and in both the world wars, even though Russia has no great stretch of coastline.
