About this Item
Folio. 110, [2]pp. Uncut. Original gilt-stamped burgundy cloth, with gold lettering on spine and front cover. Top edge gilt. Color frontispiece. The author divides this striking volume nearly equally between gloves and shoes. Among the amazing gloves featured in this book are those of William of Wykeham, probably worn at the dedication of New College, Oxford, where they are kept, being in a wonderful state of preservation. Next to these in antiquity come gloves of Henry VI; there are three pairs of Henry VIII's, a pair of Queen Elizabeth's, a single glove of Mary, Queen of Scots, and a pair of Shakespeare's. King Charles I and Oliver Cromwell are also represented in this way. In the boots and shoes section, we find those of Henry VI, Queen Elizabeth, Elizabeth of Bohemia, Charles I, and Queen Anne. Among the most curious is a gentleman's boot with a heel six inches high. This remarkable work is splendidly illustrated throughout with 47 illustrated and photographic plates of gloves (including four in color), and 33 illustrated and photographic plates of shoes, including one in full color. Moderate rubbing and discoloration along edges of binding. Foxing to endpapers, half-title, and fly leaf. Minor age-toning along paper margin. Binding in overall good- to good, interior in good+ to very good condition. Seller Inventory # 39596
