About this Item
Including an exact and particular account of the memorable events, on the 20th of June, the 14th of July, the 10th of August, and the 2d of September: with Observations and Reflections on the Characters, Principles and Conduct of the most conspicuous persons concerned in promoting the suspension and dethronement of Louis the Sixteenth. Printed in London for E. and T. Williams, No. 13; Strand. viii, 492pp. 1792. The sole edition. James Fennell, 1766-1816, was an English actor, who made his first appearance in 1787 at the Edinburgh theatre. In the summer of 1791 he travelled to Paris during the period when Louis the XVIs powers were suspended by the National Assembly. His original design was to stage a play The Picture of Paris. It went into rehearsal in the winter of 1791, but was never performed. Educated at Eton, and Trinity College Cambridge, and with an early training in law, Fennell was well equipped to offer an important and detailed first-hand account of the momentous events unfolding before him. In 1794 he emigrated to America, publishing An Apology for the Life of James Fennell (Philadelphia, 1814). Post octavo. (8in x 5in). This volume is in excellent condition. It is bound in three quarter calf with matching cloth. No shelf wear. The spine has gilt rulings, titling and ornaments. Text clean throughout save for two short marginal notes and two short marginal lines; all in a very old hand. All edges coloured. This looks to be an early twentieth century rebind when owned by Fritz Ponsonby of the Grenadier Guards (1867 - 1935) who became the first Baron Sysonby, whose the engraved bookplate is on the pastedown and who wrote the definitive three volume history of the Grenadier Guards. A very scarce book. I can only find a single copy for sale on the internet at £605 in the USA. Extra shipping needed outside UK. Seller Inventory # 10526

More InformationSHIPPING TOO DEAR? BUYERS OF LIGHT ITEMS SUCH AS PRINTS, MAPS OR SMALL BOOKS SHOULD CONTACT ME FOR A LOWER CHARGE BEFORE MAKING A PAYMENT. Want more than one item? Contact me for a discount. As a major print and map seller on AbeBooks I do not want my shipping prices any higher for buyers of these items and so my shipping rates cover only 500 grams world wide (except for airmail parcels to the USA thanks to massive rise forced on the USPS*) UK limits are 1kg 1st class, 2kg 2nd class. Additional items are at no extra shipping cost if within the weight. Heavier items at cost. International tracking/signed for is £4.00 extra. UK signed-for plus £1.00 or Special Delivery at cost. I may require tracking or signed-for services for valuable items. Payment by PayPal preferred. *USPS increased charges for parcels in July 2020: £10 will airmail a large letter to the US from the UK up to 750 grams but a parcel up to only 250 grams. I will try to find alternative carriers for heavier books to combat these high prices on USPS. Economy rates were not increased so 500 grams still £7.00; 1kg £10; 2kg £13..
