About this Item
[good sound copy, lightly shelfwear, tiny bump to top rear corner, some age-toning to edges of text block; the jacket is pretty rough, with heavy edgewear, some paper loss at and adjacent to spine ends, nearly split along rear hinge (but held together by new mylar jacket protector)]. Novel about poor white sharecroppers in the Mississippi delta region, specifically focused on its protagonist, Clementine Mann, a "cabin-patch woman" who works hard to make a success of the family farm despite being married to "a sulking, slinking no-account" husband. In the face of natural disasters and her husband's general no-goodness, she dreams of a better life, which eventually leads her into an affair with a neighboring planter -- who's presented as "'a man of warmth and gentleness and fine mind," but who nonetheless is part of an exploitive social caste system in which "aristocrats" such as himself are pretty much free to have their way with the "white trash" women. This was the author's first novel, but despite its being generally well-reviewed, she seems to have never produced another. The New York Times critic wrote: "Miss Heard writes her tragic indictment with force and passion. Her dialogue is particularly fresh in the use of picturesque localisms." -- but it should also be noted, in light of modern sensibilities, that such "localisms" include a liberal use of the n-word (which of course was not at all unusual in "Southern literature" of the day, but still -- be aware).
