About this Item
The eighth and final issue of this journal issued by One Purse, a Situationist-inspired, direct democracy group involved in the Upper West Side squatters movement (specifically the occupation on 111th and 112th Streets & Amsterdam Ave.). The group ultimately became disillusioned with the project's co-optation and issued this bitter, final issue of their report from the struggle. Contents includes "Our Practice at the Occupation," which chronicles the group's experiences; the text of three leaflets, "Appeal to the Community," "We Won't Move," and "The Truth Is Still the Truth Even If It Is a Minority Opinion"; a centerfold photo spread juxtaposing activists engaged in sign painting, demonstrating and discussion with portraits of activists from El Comité, The Columbia Tenants Union, El Centro Dominicano de Orientacion & Asistencia Social, Puerto Rican Socialist Party, and the Cathedral St. John the Divine, who are accused of "replac[ing] the dominant hierarchy with their own"; a letter written by one of the One Purse participants "To my friends in the Plumbing and Electricity Class:; and a statement, "The Minimum Definition of Revolutionary Organizations," adopted by the 7th Conference of the Situationist International, July 1966. One Purse must have disembarked for the West Coast following this issue, as our copy features a One Purse stamp with an Oakland address. Stapled, photo-illustrated wrappers (8 ½" x 7"), 16 p, illus. In English and Spanish. Light wear, about Fine. Four institutions holding scattered issues in OCLC, with most of those holding this one. Seller Inventory # 11250
