Volume I: vi, 354 pp., frontispiece portrait, 2 plans of which one is folding, Volume II: 292 pp. 1 plans, original cloth backed boards, from the library of Professor Bernhardt, copy in very good condition, index, Leipzig: Dyk'sche Buchhandlung, 1867-68. First German edition. William Palgrave, a Jesuit missionary the priest was given support by the French government, as well as businessmen who were interested in establishing contacts for importing cotton and horses. He disguised himself as a Syrian Christian doctor named Selim Abu Mahmoud al Eis and spent 13 months travelling. Palgrave visited the al-Rashid capital Ha'il and Riyadh, capital of the Saudis. Then on to the shores of the Arabian Gulf where he visited Bahrain and importantly gives us probably the best nineteenth century description of Qatar and a detailed description of life in Oman and Muscat.
