About this Item
The English translation of the author's novel "Phai Daeng" (1954) in which he described the lives of personalities, both lay and Buddhist clergy, who reside in the fictional Red Bamboo Village. Pramoj's particular focus was on the conflicts that arose between traditional Thai village life and the forces of modernization that were then transforming the country. MR Kukrit Pramoj was one of the foremost politicians and intellectuals of 20th century Thailand. Born to an aristocratic family and Oxford educated, Pramoj returned to his homeland and to a political and writing career, eventually serving as the country's 13th Prime Minister and becoming one of the country's most respected authors. Aside from being a scarce item, this book is also a fine example of mid 20C Thai typography, with two-tone illustrations on the title pages and small, charming b&w sketches ending several chapters. Original gold stampted red cloth boards, no dj. Faint tape residue marks on front and rear endpapers. Interior clean, bright and unmarked. 205 pp. Size: 21 x 14 cm. Seller Inventory # 001351
