Dropsy is the archaic term for edema, an accumulation of fluid in the interstitium, which causes a lot of pain. It is often found in the feet, ankles, and lower legs. The author, Georges-Frederic Bacher, had become famous for inventing tonic pills for the treatment of dropsy. He sold the formula to the Crown.
