"Punch, Or the London Charivari - 1879-83" By Mr. Punch, and various Contributors & Illustrators. This is a First Edition, published by The Punch Office, 85 Fleet Street, London, 1879-1883. Thick & heavy item. PLEASE NOTE: As this book is heavy (over 1.8 Kg with packaging), if you are buying this from outside the U.K. please expect additional shipping costs. 4to, 28.3 cm x 22.5 cm x 3.5 cm, Black leather-covered spine & corners, Red panel & gilt embossed lettering on spine, Glossy marbled paper-covered boards, Brown endpapers, All edges died mottled red, no dust-jacket. Weight: 1.618 Kg (1618 Grams). CONTENTS ARE MOSTLY LIKE NEW!!! However, pages 111 to 118, and pages 149 to 151 are loose. Spine is sturdy, gilt quite bright, some scratches & indents in leather which is a bit scuffed in places & worn away at head & tail. Cover is scratched & scuffed, discoloured in places, slight damage on front, edges worn, scuffed & bumped with paper binding missing in places. Corners are bumped & scuffed, leather has indents & is worn away on edges. Pastedowns & endpapers slightly marked, endpapers & adjacent few pages are rippled at front & rear of book. Some pages (very few) have light handling creases, and/or tiny edge tears/nicks/bumps, and/or corner folds. Pages 165 & 167 have rough-cut vertical edge, p. 167 is missing top corner piece, no text is lost. Small ink spots among text on p. 168, text still legible. Vol. 84: Small burnt round hole on among text on pages 5 to 8, text still legible. Page 11 is slightly soiled. Page 23 has a tear & folds on vertical edge, this shows through as indents on adjacent pages either side. illustration p. 259 has a small tear at the top, and large piece torn away & badly repaired by previous owner. Light age tanning & occasional foxing throughout. VERY RARE ITEM, BEAUTIFUL INSIDE!!! Another great bound copy of Punch, in which Mr. Punch and the Contributors and Artists relate all current events, politics & much more in their own satirical way. Profusely illustrated with fantastic sketches, drawings & engravings, many full & double page. However, although the title on the book's spine reads "Punch 1879-83", this bound copy of Punch does NOT contains consecutive weekly segments as was published. Here are the dates of the contents: Volume 77: Preface dated January 3, 1880. Begins with a single weekly segment dated May, 3 1879. Next is September 13, 1879 to January 3, 1880. Next is Volume 84 beginning January 3, 1883 to February 11, 1883. Next is March 31, 1883 to May 12, 1883. Next is June 2, 1883, to June 30, 1883. Next is Volume 85, beginning July 7, 1883 to August 25, 1883. Next is September 8, 1883 to September 22, 1883.
