About this Item
8vo. 1st edition. pp[6], viii, [2], 317 + single-page printed testimonial for Capt. Liardet's Signal Balls from Rear-Admiral Hyde Parker, and single-page publisher's list. hand-coloured plate showing Liardet's signal balls and a lithograph plate depicting HMS Cleopatra assisting a sinking ship in a storm. good clean condition hardback in the original blind decorated and gilt lettered cloth, a little worn to the spine. staining to foot of end-papers and to the lithograph plate. Captain Liardet entered the navy in 1809 and pursued a successful and noteworthy career, brought to an end by an accident with a field gun in which he lost his sight. This instructional volume was written for the benefit of Royal Navy midshipmen, in particular the author's step-son, but is based very much on Liardet's own experiences with many recollections from his own naval career.
