About this Item
Nobel Laureate Philip S. Hench's copy of one of the copies specially bound for laureates, though without any ownership marking. Original blue cloth, all edges gilt. Near Fine. This is one of the annual volumes that includes the portraits, Nobel Lectures, etc. for the laureates of a given year. All varieties of the volumes are uncommon but especially these ones in the blue cloth. The winners in 1960 were: Chemistry, Willard F. Libby; Literature, Saint-John Perse; Medicine, Sir Frank Macfarlane BURNET, Peter MEDAWAR; Peace, Albert Lutuli; Physics, Donald A. Glaser. Titles of the lectures (which are not delievered by all laureates; only certain Peace and Literature winners gave them) may be found on the Nobel Foundation Web site. While I have not seen anything in writing that proves that the blue copies were made specifically for laureates, I have seen several that did belong to them, and they surely were produced for some special purpose, so until I learn otherwise I will continue to suggest that is what the blue volumes are. This volume came from a group that belonged to Philip Showalter Hench (1896-1965), who shared the 1950 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Edward Calvin Kendall and Tadeus Reichstein, 'for their discoveries relating to the hormones of the adrenal cortex, their structure and biological effects.' Hench did sign one of the volumes but not this one. Seller Inventory # 15546
