About this Item
Cloth, top edge green, 4to, 30 cm, xiii, 227 pp, plates, map. The Sandars lectures in bibliography, 1963. "Mr Norton's Sandars lectures comprise a history of all the presses known to have been working in Spain in the period 1501-1520 with details of the careers of the printers, of aspects of Spanish book-production, and of the typographical material available. For biographical detail Mr Norton draws on a wide range of printed documents; but the rest is based on his study of the surviving books. As a result of his researches into types and ornaments, he has been able to ascribe many anonymously printed books to their printers. In particular, he has been able to bring order into the hitherto muddled chronology of the early editions of the Celestina, the most important Spanish literary work of the time. Mr Norton's researches also throw new light on the Spanish book-trade - its subjection to royal influences, the scope and variety of its production, its sponsors and supporters, its limitations in the face of well-organized foreign competition. No attempt is made to record all the editions of the period (Mr Norton proposes to publish a detailed catalogue separately); but nearly half of all the books known to have been produced are mentioned in the text and listed in the index of titles." - from the blurb. Booklabel of the bibliophile A R A Hobson on front pastedown endpaper, corners a trifle bumped, otherwise Very Good in slightly chipped dustwrapper. Laid in are a copy of a 1972 broadside "Primeros incunables de la mas antigua imprenta hispana" and a clipping of a TLS review of the book. Seller Inventory # ABE-47536
