About this Item
In this novel, Wallace recounts the events leading up to the fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453. The legendary Wandering Jew, in the guise of a Prince of India, aids in bringing about the downfall of the city and its empire by aiding and advising the Turkish Sultan Mehmed II. Lewis Wallace (1827-1905), General in the Union Army during the Civil War, Governor of the New Mexico Territory, changed the popular American view of novels into that of respectable reading with his stories of ancient history framed in Christian terms. His literary successes helped him to engage more fully in the politics of the times. This was his 3rd and final novel. This copy has the dedication to his father, David Wallace, so is not a 1st printing. Both volumes were printed in 1893 because 1893 is given on front of title pages. Vol. I has 502pp. Vol. II 578pp. Both books are hardcover with navy cloth boards embossed with red, silver and gold lettering & designs, but no DJs. Prior owner's name signed on ffep in pencil, both volumes. Vol 1 has pricing also in pencil. Interior is tight, clean & unmarked. Book have square corners with minor shelf-wear at bottom edges. Gutters as new. Copyright 1893. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR. Seller Inventory # 006999
