Biography if fin-de-siecle figure Robert de Montesque (1855-1921), the French poet, art collector and interpreter, painter and all-around "dandy", an arbiter of poetic and social elegance in the era. As an art critic, he launched the Modern Style (which we now call Art Nouveau); as a model he posed for Whistler and other famous portraitists; ; his poetic experiments influenced Apollinaire; he was a friend of Proust, Oscar Wilde (Dorian Gray was in part modeled on him), Mallarme, and Verlaine.
