1878. First edition in 3 volumes. vii, 301pp.; vii, 297pp.; vii, 319pp. Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) was a popular English novelist. Among his best-known works is a series of novels collectively known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire, which revolves around the imaginary county of Barsetshire. He also wrote novels on political, social, and gender issues, and other topical matters. Is He Popenjoy? is a comic novel written late in his career. The plot revolves around the themes of property and inheritance, as the relatives of the Marquis of Brotherton question the legitimacy of a foreign-born heir to the family estate. The three volumes are uniformly bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spines and black designs on the front boards. These three volumes have been in a circulating library and have obvious signs of use. The boards have shelf wear and soiling and volume 2 has a 2 1/2" x 4" label near the top of the front board. The circulating library labels on volumes 1 and 3 have been removed leaving a cleaner patch where they were affixed. The spine ends and corners are bumped with some damage and loss to the cloth around the corners and spine ends. The spines of volumes 1 and 3 are darkened leaving the spine of volume 2 looking cleaner. The only other such library indication is a small purple stamp on the top edge of the title page in volume 2. The contents are tight although a repair has been carried out on volumes 1 and 3 involving rebacking the spines and recasing. This repair is probably from the late 20th century and looks as if it has been carried out by someone with a bit of knowledge, but not a professional bookbinder. Signs of the repair are visible down the spine gutter of the endpapers in these volumes. The endpapers of volume 2 are white and the other volumes have yellow fronted endpapers. There is some foxing on the first and last few pages of each volume and a little scattered light foxing elsewhere within the book. A few of the pages in volume 2 appear to have been loose in the past as there are nicks and small tears with some soiling on the fore edge. The front free endpaper of volume 3 has damage and staining on the fore edge and a piece is missing from the bottom corner of the half-title page in this volume. There are scattered stains and marks from finger smudges in all three volumes but most noticeably in volume 3. As these books have been well used, there are other minor faults and marks. Overall, this set of three volumes is probably best regarded as being a sound reading copy or suitable for a professional repair.
